Dream of the white ferry

We have finally succumbed to the what many in our country have described as the American Dream. Buying a house. House prices in Seattle are absolutely insane. For example, a 600 foot condo can start at $300,000. Since our first two years in Seattle were spent in a 575 square foot apartment we started looking into what was available out on the Puget Sound islands or on the Olympic Peninsula. We decided on the cool little city of Bremerton. Bremerton is roughly a 55 minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle. Many of you are already saying to yourselves, “An hour commute! Are you guys crazy?! You are going to hate it!” Before you rush to send us emails advising us not to do it, let me tell you, we can buy a 1500 to 2000 square foot house for the same price as a 600 square foot condo in Seattle. Now about that commute, yeah it will be two hours a day on a ferry, but I will take that any day over two hours in traffic on I-5. When you are sitting in traffic, what are doing? Nothing but driving. Not to mention wishing that Honda in front of you would turn their freaking signal off. On the ferry you can read, sleep, use their WiFi to surf the net, write in your blog, watch seals swim, stare of into the beautiful Puget Sound, or a handful of other things. My employer is moving our office within a fifteen minute bike ride from the ferry terminal in downtown Seattle. All the houses we are looking at are within a five to ten minute bike ride to the ferry terminal in Bremerton. That will make my comute car free. Very cool.

“An hour commute! Are you guys crazy?! You are going to hate it!” Okay, to be fair, I would probably hate a 575 square foot apartment more than I would hate a 1 hour commute. Congratulations... enjoy the seals!
